Football prep athletes across the nation should have one thing in mind when being recruited or just as a general rule- Staying Focused. Temptations often affect us all, but especially in the sports world, it's even more crucial to stay on the straight and narrow path to success whether it's on, or off the football field. Peer pressure is a major factor among teens across the nation, and to an athlete who wants to succeed it can be even more difficult to avoid bashing from their high school peers. Drinking Alcohol and Smoking (Marijuana) definitely fall under this category, as the pressure of stardom can impact into a ton of different outcomes(I.E. Ryan Leaf). We asked Seattle Prep football star, Tere Calloway -All Purpose Back (Who is on the Straight and Narrow path) how his peers perceive him since he chooses not to go down that path?,
"Well before I emerged as a Star football player many of my peers made fun of me for not partying and things like that. But, since I've emerged I have been respected more by my peers and I think I have also relieved the peer pressure of my younger peers. If young kids ,whether sports stars or not, see that The "star football player" can be cool without partying and drinking and smoking, then It makes them feel that not partying can also be cool."
So Tere's determination is a great example of being mentally tough, which is crucial in football, and in life. Staying Focused can't be very easy for a young athlete, when asking Tere how he stays on the straight and narrow, he replied;
"I stay focused by remembering what I have to look forward to, and what my future can bring. I won't drink or smoke regardless of football but it also helps in any situation to carry myself, as if a College Coach or Scout was always in my presence." This has obviously paid off for Tere, as he now holds 6 scholarships (SDSU, Purdue, Colorado, SMU, Portland State, and Idaho) with several other schools contacting him. This has to be a self-selling motivator as the prep star was asked what motivates him?
